Your blissful adults-only choice

A picture of Iosif Roussos

Hi, my name is Joseph. I was born and raised in Syros. I am in love with this island and know every little corner of it. Back in the 90’s I needed a radical change in my life and somehow I found myself in this magical place called "Lotos", the Greek word for the persimmon tree. Just a bare hill with a few houses near the beach at that time. The moment I went up to the hill and saw this view for the first time was the moment I felt like this would be the background for the new life I was dreaming of.

Since then, many things have changed around here but the view remains the same. The one that will make me forget all my worries and troubles. And that’s the feeling I would like to share with you; being peaceful and carefree. Something like what the companions of Odysseus felt when they ate the lotus fruits, forgetting their earlier lives and only longing to stay forever in the land of the Lotus-eaters.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that this place bears this name. Lotos is all about leaving everything behind.

The Lotus-eaters

λωτός /loˈtos/ ancient Greek λωτός & Neo-Latin lotus

  • (botanical) species of flowers comprising about 100 herbaceous or shrubby plants, with yellow, red or white flowers
  • (fruit) persimmon, the fruit of the plant Diospyros lotus, and generally of all species of the genus Diospyros, which is nearly spherical in shape, orange to red in color, and astringent in taste, once cut from the tree. After a few days, it becomes sweet and juicy. Other names: kaki, Diospyros the kaki, date plum.
  • (Greek mythology) a fruit referred in the Odyssey causing people who eat it to enter a world of reverie and oblivion.
The Lotus-eaters

“The Lotus-eaters did not plan death for my comrades,
but gave them of the lotus to taste.
And whosoever of them ate of the honey-sweet fruit of the lotus,
had no longer any wish to bring back word or to return,
but there they were fain to abide among the Lotus-eaters,
feeding on the lotus, and forgetful of their homeward way.”

Homer, Odyssey (Rapsody IX, 92-97)
